The story behind the water displays
The hydraulic system at Vaux-le-Vicomte, designed in the 17th century by André Le Nôtre—Louis XIV’s famed landscape architect—operates on a gravity-fed network of aqueducts and reservoirs. Though restored in the 19th century, the original engineering marvel still brings life to the estate’s fountains. Of the 36 pools Le Nôtre created, 20 remain active today—testaments to the grandeur of French formal garden design. Let yourself be swept away by the beauty and fluidity of this unforgettable sensory experience.
Did you know?
The carp living in the château’s basins and moats play a vital role in keeping the water clean by feeding on algae—preserving the clarity of the pools and the beauty of the gardens.
