Retour aux Sources
The Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte lies at the heart of a 500-hectare green setting, itself protected as part of the listed site of the Val d’Ancoeur. In keeping with this authenticity, the goal is to operate the 22 fountains in the garden on a daily basis without altering the layout or the hydraulic system designed by André Le Nôtre in the late 1650s, which functions solely through gravity, without any other energy source.
Drawing water from the river or nearby springs, this supply will remain entirely natural, with particular care given to the careful and responsible management of our most precious resource: water.
Several chapters make up this major project, which will unfold over approximately thirty years with an overall budget of €100 million.
Three stages have already been completed:
- The restoration of the two basins in the Cour d’Honneur in 2023;
- The rehabilitation of the Source des Jumeaux in 2024;
- The restoration of the Gerbe d’eau in 2025.
Let us continue together this ambitious project for the future of Vaux-le-Vicomte. Contribute to the restoration of the Grottoes, the current chapter of the Retour aux Sources project.
Launched in October 2025, the project to revive the Allée des Marmousets is the largest planting programme ever undertaken on the estate. It aims to recreate an original avenue designed by André Le Nôtre, opening a new part of the estate to visitors.
192 field maples will be planted by winter 2026–2027 thanks to your support. You can adopt your tree for $1,200.
