Garden statues – “Reveal our true faces”

A real outdoor decoration, Vaux-le-Vicomte’s garden illustrates the subtle alliance between plants and statues: walkers in a 17th or 18th-century garden expected to find various ornaments, such as statues, ponds, and vases of varying shapes and content. For Vaux-le-Vicomte, Nicolas Fouquet, an exceptional art-lover, placed commissions with the best sculptors of his day: Michel Anguier, Philippe de Buyster, François Girardon, Mathieu Lespagnandel, Thibaut Poissant…. Time has taken its toll: in 2015, the restoration of the 59 statues in the garden will begin, with a celebratory exhibition of photographs by Jörg Brauer, in the gardens of Vaux-le-Vicomte (starting on 4 July 2015): “Conversation in silence”
